又看一段日本新聞,畫面是航拍的海水吞噬城市的鏡頭,旁白是——當然我不懂日語,but I could comprehend the tone of voice, i.e., prosody, which is the expertise in my lab! But the thing is, the prosody of the news reporter was neutral, not emotional at all. If I was not watching the video simultaneously (if there was no visual cues), I could never figure out he was reporting an awful disaster based on only the prosodic cues. Janpanese people always suppress themselves. This is called "display rules" by some emotion researchers which refer to the social norms of how and the extent to which emotions should be expressed in a given society. In Japanese culture, the rule is suppression. This is a psychological point of view regarding why Japanese appeared so calm while confronting sudden disasters.
但,不管他們如何變態,日本人是風格獨特的值得尊重的民族(當然,任何一個民族都值得尊重;哪怕韓國人,做的泡菜也很好吃);and for me as student, as far as my knowledge in psychology, their intellectual contribution to the scientific community is adorable.
