Hello everyone, my name is ***Liu, I am a graduate student majoring in psycholinguistics. Today I’d like to talk to you about the process of children’s language development.
Language is the most important communication system for human being. But how does language develop for us ever since birth? Scientists have been always curious on this question, which can be very helpful to clinical diagnosis for children with language disorders, as well as providing important clues to the corresponding therapies.
The process of language development consists of 7 stages, each of which is identified by chronological age and the corresponding characteristics of language.
Let’s start from the first stage. The first stage is from birth to about 6 months old, called “unconscious first sounds stage”, which means children can make out meaningless utterances automatically, but meanwhile, they have the natural ability to distinguish human voices from other non-voice sounds.
The second stage, from 6months to 12 months old, is called Babbling stage. Babbling means uttering meaningless or unintelligible sounds. This is what the children do during this stage, and they also begin to gain the sensitivity special for their native language, to which their babbling is closely related.
The third stage, holophrastic stage, is from 12 months to 18 months old. Holophrastic means expressing ideas in a single word, so this stage is also called one word stage. Children begin to utter single word of diverse meanings, among which nouns and verbs play the most important roles.
The fourth stage comes up around 18 months old and continues to 24 months old. During this period, children can speak phrases made of two content words, so it is called two-word stage.
The fifth stage lasts from 2 years to 3 years old, during which children begin to construct more complex phrases. These phrases are constructed by a small number of content words but without function words. It is very similar to telegraph, so it is called telegraphic stage.
From 3 to 5 years old, children have the sixth stage—early sentence stage. Their vocabulary is expanding dramatically, and they begin to use function words to make grammatically correct sentences.
Since 5 years old, children step into the final stage—complete grammar stage. They begin to learn various syntax and grammar, with which make more and more complex sentences, getting closer and closer to adults, and finally gain the completed ability of language.
In summary, this is the 7 stages of children’s language development -- unconscious first sounds stage, babbling stage, holophrastic stage, two-word stage, telegraphic stage, early sentence stage, and complete grammar stage, which are divided by age and the corresponding characteristics of language. |
